Why is it important?

This study lays a foundation for more research on how othering and (national) stereotyping is being carried out in Arab countries' media. This research can further lead to identification of consistent patterns in media coverage and to develop strategies on how to challenge these patterns through training of journalists and media literacy campaigns.

Perspectives

This study is particularly insightful in exploring how media systems of different countries can directly or indirectly influence the operation of journalists to convey messages of the status quo during times of crisis. Themes such as nationalism, stereotyping, othering, discrimination as expressed in journalistic outputs are clearly brought out in this research.
