What is it about?

The piece explores the transition from fuller-bodied 1980s to fitter 1990s sex symbols drawing on many media sources with emphasis on film. It also examines how cinema lost its major role generating sex-symbols after the late 1980s when ‘lifestyle’ media gained a powerful role in the Greek mediascape.

Why is it important?

The piece uses the body as its main analytical tool and shows how low-status source material can be analytically relevant. It also examines porn films alongside other cinema. Although it strongly influenced the production of sex symbols, pornography is not often included in relevant academic approaches to cinema and celebrity culture.

Perspectives

I worked with much enthusiasm on this piece about a change whose most recent stages I followed as a teenager in the late 1990s. This article also associates film studies and contemporary history in Greece in an original way.
