What is it about?

Mixed reality allows people to experience digital images and sound that are added to actual images and sounds. To explore the potential uses of mixed reality, four questions are posed. The questions and their answers invite comparisons between the new technology of mixed reality and ancient technologies such as the palimpsest, or reused manuscript.

Why is it important?

Using the four questions, or tetrad, to predict how a new technology will be used is a creative and novel approach. It provides insights from history not available using more conventional methods. By applying our knowledge of ancient technologies, the “trajectory” of a new technology can be better understood.

Perspectives

Like other new technologies, mixed reality holds the promise of benefits for many people. Also like other new technologies, mixed reality may result in unintended consequences. For example, the discussion of the tetrad in the article suggests that mixed reality will be used to intensify the consumption of goods and services.
