What is it about?

The article takes up a dialogue initiated in the first issue of Design Ecologies, evolving in relation to questions of design within a context of concepts of complexity. Complexity in design, the article argues, is addressed through a process of reading and writing. In this context, de Certeau’s concepts of ‘tactics’ and ‘strategies’ are explored as useful to differentiate between open and closed, indeterminate and determinate processes. The aim of design is poiesis, complexity at the borders of language.

Why is it important?

Design does not simplify compexity like science would do. Instead it has developped methodologies to address what cannot be fully described. The article provides for an introduction to this situation.

Perspectives

Design addresses complexity through poiesis. It operates at the borders of language.
