What is it about?

This article examines the challenges and complexities of assessing the value of design in contemporary economies, using New Zealand as a case study. We argue that the adoption of a nationally coordinated approach to design education and innovation provides widespread benefits, but for this to happen, government needs to invest in design, in particular in innovation and the performance of companies.

Why is it important?

The first assessment of the economic value of design in New Zealand, published in 2017, showed the significance of this sector to New Zealand (on par with the agricultural sector). It also brings to light the value of government investment in design, despite consecutive New Zealand governments showing a science focussed myopia to innovation.

Perspectives

If a government is to be persuaded that more investment in design is needed, the New Zealand design ecosystem needs to support advocacy as a collective.
