What is it about?

I am an artist with a background in biology, and this essay describes an art and science project that uses real diagrams and data from biology research papers to create a new drawing called 'Model for the origins of movement'. The drawing is based on biological studies of the evolution of the muscle proteins that underlie almost all of life's movement and growth, from bacteria and earthworms to olympic weightlifters.

Why is it important?

Diagrammatology, the study of diagrams, is a relatively new subject that covers a wide range of fields from science and mathematics to technology and engineering, However, very little is known about the use of diagrams in art.

Perspectives

My artistic practice is an ongoing attempt to raise ideas and images from science above the purely factual and functional, in order to highlight the aesthetic, poetic and philosophical nature of the research.
