What is it about?

This chapter looks at colonial urban infrastructure development in Dhaka as part of colonial efforts to combat epidemic disease in colonial East Bengal. It argues that although there were major steps taken in the development of health and sanitation infrastructure via the expansion of the Mitford Hospital, which undoubtedly played important roles in reducing mortality from epidemic diseases such as cholera, colonial policies and responses to disease in Dhaka failed to eradicate these epidemics due to a number of crucial factors.
