Why is it important?
Indigenous people in Ecuador seems to be a vulnerable population dying more frequently from respiratory infections than the non-indigenous people. Several reasons for this vulnerability are yet to be identified and more research is needed in order to prevent deaths in the future.
Perspectives
This article is the first to estimate the burden of deaths from respiratory infections in Ecuadorean indigenous people. The pediatric deaths are striking in the antibiotic era. Etiology, timely diagnosis, treatment and long-term outcomes remain understudied. I hope this article stands as ground for future research to ultimately prevent deaths from respiratory infections in vulnerable groups.
