What is it about?

The approaches to defining the required analytical quality for HbA1c assays has progressed with technical assay advances as well as the gradual changes in the application of HbA1c for monitoring, diagnosis and screening for diabetes and prediabetes. Further improvements are required, necessary and developing.

Why is it important?

Obesity, prediabetes and diabetes are pandemic diseases in developed and developing societies. This makes the tools to facilitate management and prevention of disease a high priority.

Perspectives

Day to day biological variability of HbA1c can be used to define analytical quality. There are arbitrary levels of quality from minimum acceptable standards to optimal and ideal standards. Optimal standards are within reach using modern enzymatic and chromatographic approaches.
