What is it about?

In over 4500 participants of the UK Biobank study, we observed a relationship between handgrip strength and heart size and heart function. This relationship suggests that a stronger muscular fitness is related with better heart health.

Why is it important?

Hand grip strength is easy to measure and may improve how we assess risk for heart disease.

Perspectives

This is an elegant study that takes advantage of accurate measurements of heart structure and function using heart MRI scans in the UK Biobank cohort. The relationship is interesting as it opens opportunities for an easy measure (handgrip strength) that potentially improves our ability to assess the future risk of heart attacks and strokes.
