Historical Analysis of Global Food Availability

What is it about?

- Assessing how global food availability has developed during the period 1965-2005 - We quantify dietary energy supply and dietary energy production at national level for nine time steps during this period. - We also investigate the trends in food self-sufficiency as well as the role of international food trade in improving food availability in the past.

Why is it important?

Our analysis indicates that global food availability has improved substantially both in absolute and relative terms during the study period (1965-2005) while food self sufficiency has not improved. The majority of global population has been living in net food import countries. Improved food availability has been mainly the effect of increased food imports.
