What is it about?

People often ask whether crustaceans feel pain. This is hard to answer, but if they don't react in any way, it's unlikely they find that stimulus painful. We test whether three species of crustaceans show any reactions to strong acids and bases. They don't.

Why is it important?

Crustaceans are often cooked alive for food, and many people see this practice and think the animals must experience pain. But this is hard to show scientifically.
