What is it about?

Genetic variants in Cryptochrome Circadian Clock 2 (CRY2) were associated with depression, and the mechanisms of action involves dysregulation of the functions of the gene.

Why is it important?

This is the first report to show that genetic variants in CRY2, a gene encoding the actual repressor or "the breaks" of the circadian clock, associate with the winter type of seasonal affective disorder, and that regulation of CRY2 functions are compromised in patients with bipolar disorder during a depressive episode.

Perspectives

A deficient switch from the evening to morning oscillators within the circadian clock has been postulated. The data supported this hypothesis.
