What is it about?

P.multocida is a bacterium that causes fowl cholera (an economically important disease of chickens and turkeys). In this paper, we identify a gene (fis) that regulates virulence genes, including those responsible for the production of capsule (which protects the bacterium from the host immune system).

Why is it important?

If you know how genes that cause disease are controlled, it may be possible to develop a vaccine that targets the regulator.
