What is it about?
Arabian camels play a key role in desert life, yet the microbes living in their guts have been poorly studied. We analyzed samples from 55 Arabian camels and discovered thousands of unknown microbes. These gut microbes were strongly linked to camel traits such as age, diet , and living conditions. Using advanced DNA sequencing, metagenomic and machine learning, we built a large reference databases of camel microbes.

Why is it important?
This is the first large-scale, high-depth metagenomic study of the dromedary camel gut microbiome. Previous research was limited by small sample sizes, shallow sequencing or pooled samples that could not reveal individual differences. This study is unique because we used shotgun metagenomic sequencing and machine learning to uncover thousands of microbes never described before. We show how strongly they are linked to camel age, diet, lifestyle. By building one the largest camel microbiome references database, we provide a timely resource for researcher and veterinarians.
Perspectives
As someone from this region, I have always valued the camel's resilience an importance. Through this study, I was able to uncover a hidden world of microbes inside them. I hope this work inspires further research and highlights the camel's role in both science and society.
