What is it about?

Like many other European countries, Germany is also seeing an increase in xenophobic attitudes. There are major regional differences within the country. Business and political leaders already see xenophobic sentiment as a threat to the attractiveness of some regions. Our study shows how xenophobic attitudes in regions influence the choice of residence of migrants who are new to Germany in order to work here.

Why is it important?

A higher level of xenophobic attitudes among the population is particularly prevalent in regions that are already suffering the most from demographic change and thus from a shortage of skilled workers, which is why they would be particularly dependent on the influx of workers. However, mobile workers from abroad avoid these regions precisely because of the attitudes prevalent there. This is counterproductive.

Perspectives

Xenophobia has a negative impact on labor migration in Germany. Our results show that cosmopolitanism - alongside political stability - is an important location factor for Germany.
