What is it about?
Using benchmarking and hypothesical scenarios, the work proposes a method to set the boundary for the health-related losses in dairy cattle in the United Kingdom to address overestimations from single-cause health problems. This information helps producers to make informed investments in animal health management.

Why is it important?
The impact of animal health problems are usually studyed as single-cause diseases. This may lead to overestimating the impact due to concurrence of diseases in the animals under study. Setting the limit to the potential impact of health problem in an animal population provides the reference to start attributing losses to specific health problems and ensure that the sum of the parts is not greater than the whole.
