What is it about?

This study explored the impact of tinnitus on cochlear implant recipients. Our publication shows that tinnitus impact, related difficulties, and management strategies often depend on sound processor use. This exploratory mixed-method study provided a better understanding of the potential benefits of sound processor use, and thus of intracochlear electrical stimulation, on the impact of tinnitus.

Why is it important?

Tinnitus is a common problem in patients with a cochlear implant. Between 4% and 25% of cochlear implant recipients experience a moderate to severe tinnitus handicap. However, apart from handicap scores, little is known about the real-life impact tinnitus has on those with cochlear implants. The study identified situations, difficulties associated with tinnitus and management strategies used by cochlear implant recipients with tinnitus. This publication gives a better understanding of the real-life impact tinnitus has on cochlear implant recipients, which can be useful for clinicians as well as patients.

Perspectives

Clinicians and industry should focus on the identified difficulties to improve the condition of current and new cochlear implant recipients experiencing tinnitus post-implantation.
