What is it about?

This article explains in detail the theoretical framework and methodology we will use to conduct the first systematic literature review of the factors associated with gender incongruence. In short, we will obtain a "map" of all the factors that have been related to people whose biological sex does not match their gender identity.

Why is it important?

This research is important because it will generate evidence-based knowledge that will be useful for clinicians assessing gender incongruence, especially given that international guidelines recommend careful assessment of factors that may interfere with clarity of gender identity development and decision making.

Perspectives

I understand that it may be frustrating that this article does not contain the final results of the research project. However, I think it presents an interesting theoretical framework and explains the importance of this study for the decision making of people with gender incongruence, their families, and therapists. It is in line with the latest statements of the Dutch team that not all patients benefit from the same treatment. I hope that this systematic review will be a contribution to the discernment of the most appropriate pathway for each patient.
