What is it about?

Coral reefs are at risk. Reef intervention strategies are being considered to assist reef survival. Growing corals to in ideal growing conditions and then deploying them to target reef locations is being considered as a strategy to restore the Great Barrier Reef. Here, we optimise the logistics of growing coral fragments in facilities and deploying them to target reefs. We consider costs, and growth-based survival rates of grown corals. This allows corals to be grown and distributed efficiently.

Why is it important?

In the era of climate change, active restoration is required to ensure the survival of vital ecosystems. This research provides a tool to inform decision-makers to improve the efficiency of large-scale restoration projects. By considering the survival rate based on the time spent in a facility, production can be optimised.

Perspectives

This research provides an unbiased, quantitative tool to assist decision-makers in the growth of their grown resources.
