What is it about?

Machine learning is increasingly part of our everyday lives. It is also an important tool for science. One way that it is currently being used is to understand sounds. Sounds are important when studying how animals behave. In this paper we investigated how we can best use machine learning to understand sounds that birds produce.

Why is it important?

Because machine learning is relatively new for understanding bird sound, it isn't yet clear what the best practices are for using it. We investigate some of these concerns so that future researchers can use them.

Perspectives

In my perspective as an author, this paper is important because it helps to form the foundation for using machine learning to understand sounds. There are lots of recordings of sounds out there, especially for birds, and having methods like machine learning to answer questions about those sounds will help immensely.
