What is it about?
The compatibility of work and life in physicians is a widely discussed topic. Little is known about the work-life balance of medical professionals working in emergency departments (EDs), specifically. Considering that the ED is a stressful setting due to shift work and a high patient turnover, research in this field is needed. To do so, we performed a qualitative focus group study with ED physicians.

Why is it important?
Our findings show that work-life balance of ED physicians has improved during the last decades. But still, factors like a high work burden, overtime hours, lack of child care opportunities or the unpredictability of emergency medicine, increase the work-life interference. Future quantitative methods, e.g. employee surveys, as well as interventional studies will be needed to improve work-life balance in ED physicians in the long term.
