What is it about?
Patients with respiratory failure or distress need precise daily assessment. One of the most useful ways is bedside lung ultrasound scanning. For standardizing these examinations, scanning points and scoring systems need to be standardized as well.

Why is it important?
According to our findings, standardizing the image aquisition protocols (ultrasound machine settings, data collection), imaging protocols (e.g. using the well-established 'BLUE-protocol'), the most commonly used scoring systems (e.g. cLUSS or qLUSS) can help to treat critically ill, ventillated patients in a safer way. Our generated 'BLUE-LUSS' score is in a positive significant correlation with the clinically most important parameter: the overall oxygenation (partial oxygen tension/fraction of inspired oxygen ratio). The whole protocol can be performed by a single operator: no additional helper is needed for the aquisition.
Perspectives
This protocol can be a general option for bedside lung ultrasound of the critically ill at places of limited or restricted human- and personal protective equipment resources.
