What is it about?

Whereas vaping was initially as a smoking cessation tool, many people that vape have never smoked. This is especially true for teenagers and young adults. many of which take up vaping because of the variety of appealing flavours. Unfortunately, we don't know what impact vaping has on lung health.

Why is it important?

Our study performed laboratory test on the effect of e-cigarette aerosols on an important material present within the lung, surfactant. If your surfactant doesn't work it makes breathing more difficult. Our research showed that all e-cigarette aerosols reduce the functionality of surfactant, and that with some flavors of e-cigarette aerosols this effect is even more pronounced.

Perspectives

Fun fact: First author Emma Graham was erroneously listed as Emma Watson in a news story about our study. We hope neither Emma is offended by the mix-up.
