What is it about?

Low back pain is common in rowing. We investigated if sensorimotor exercise is beneficial in reducing pain and disability in the German national team of sweep rowing. Starting from low average values, disability was reduced after 10 weeks of training. Perhaps not unsurprisingly, there was no substantial change in functional parameters like trunk strength, jump height and balance in the intervention and the control group.

Why is it important?

Our findings indicate, that sensorimotor exercise with perturbations might be effective for rowers to decrease low back pain, but further research is needed.

Perspectives

It was a pleasure to work with the coaches and athletes together and build the program on their needs while conducting the study. Considering this, we directly integrated the training program into the current practice. It was quite nice to see, that the athletes and coaches endorsed the whole process of conducting the study and were willing to change some training routines to do so.
