What is it about?

Nature-based tourism is a growing sector of the economy in northern latitudes. We show how bird tourism contributes to regional economies across Alaska by providing jobs and income to local residents.

Why is it important?

Showcasing how our natural environment contributes to our economy is an important part of making the case for conserving and preserving more habitat. It's a win win for nature and the economy.

Perspectives

Economics is often viewed as the dismal science, pointing out problems, estimating damages, e.g. related to climate change. This article was a joy to write as it highlights the value of nature, emphasizing that without protecting more habitat for birds, successes and values related to increasing bird tourism would not be attainable.
