What is it about?
All lung components exhibited declining SOS with aging, such as loss of smooth muscles, collagen, and elastic fibers. To collagenase digestion, young and middle-aged groups presented a sensitive reduction of SOS, whereas old groups showed resistance.

Why is it important?
SOS values alteration is correlated with structural changes in aging. Moreover, SOS changes revealed the decline of sensitivity against collagenase with aging.
Perspectives
Scanning acoustic microscopy makes speed-of-sound images, which reveal both structure and function simultaneously. No staining is necessary, and images are obtained in a few minutes. Moreover, usual histological slides are available, although the thickness is 10 um. I hope this method may be used in wider areas of research.
