What is it about?

We had previously found that during term labour the inflammatory changes seen in the human myometrium occurred after labour had started rather than at the onset. Suggesting that the inflammation in the myometrium was a consequence rather than the cause of term human labour. We therefore decided to investigate if at the onset of term human labour there were inflammatory changes in other reproductive tissues such as the amnion, choriodecidua parietalis and choriodecidua basalis.

Why is it important?

We need to understand the role in inflammation as a trigger term labour in more detail and identify the likely site of this stimulus. We can then use this to understand how inflammation triggers preterm labour and develop treatment targeted to reduce inflammation at tissues such as the choriodecidua rather than the myometrium.

Perspectives

This publication was important in confirming that the choriodecidua parietalis plays a role in the onset of term labour and potentially preterm labour.
