What is it about?

The most common medical decision is the prescription of medicines. More than 130 different drugs with proven efficacy are currently available for the treatment of patients with mental disorders. Multiple psychotropic drugs are often required but lead to increased medication risks. We have shown that most inpatients with depressive disorders receive multiple medIcations and that risky drug combinations are frequent. Furthermore, we have shown the main factors that can lead to medication risks.

Why is it important?

We have shown the main pharmaceuticals and patient groups that have increased medication risks. Clinicians can use these results to avoid common medication risks and look at patients with a high risk profile with close scrutiny.

Perspectives

We hope that our article contributes to increased drug safety in hospital psychiatry. It should be interesting to all clinical staff involved in medical decision making and hopefully increases awareness for the main factors of avoidable drug risks.
