What is it about?

Adolescents are considered the group of higher risk in relation to diet, because they have higher frequency of fast food consumption, sugary drinks, biscuits and salty food. This work analyzes data from half a decade of changes in the consumption of food markers of eating habits by Brazilian adolescents.

Why is it important?

Some news was positive, adolescents decreased their consumption of sweets and soft drinks, and increased their consumption of vegetables. However, adolescents also decreased their consumption of beans, a traditional Brazilian food, and increased their consumption of fried foods. We note that gender, race/skin color and school administrative status influenced food consumption. It is also worrying that still ¼ of this population consumes soft drinks regularly.

Perspectives

Understanding the food consumption tendency of adolescents is important to think about interventions and public policies that contribute to the improvement of the population's eating habits. The current food system is pointed out as one of the main responsible for climate change, so it is essential to monitor food consumption trends and work to promote the consumption of fresh foods and traditional foods, produced locally.
