What is it about?

A key characteristic of mushroom polysaccharides that elicit an immune modulatory response is that they are rich in β-glucans and low in α-glucans. Based on β- and α-glucan content we selected three mushroom extracts to combine into a formula, with the effect of the individual extracts and the formula being assessed for their ability to impact the immune system response.

Why is it important?

Even though synergistic immune modulatory effects between plant natural products have been reported to our knowledge this is the first report of synergistic immunomodulatory activity between defined mushroom preparations.

Perspectives

Although further studies are required to better understand the synergistic immunomodulatory effect observed by our mushroom formula, our study provides a key starting point to further explore the chemistry and biology of mushroom polysaccharides as immune system modulators.
