What is it about?
This study leverages a large dataset of pediatric urgent care visits to demonstrate the complex interplay of factors driving the recent increased care burden. Pediatric emergency department volumes are increasing, and these increased volumes are associated with negative patient outcomes.

Why is it important?
Patient factors have shifted in step with increased service demands, but the connection between patient volumes and specific patient factors is poorly understood.
Perspectives
Increased pediatric urgent care service demand at our centre is driven by a shift in both increased frequency and duration of visits. Over 17 years, decreased access to primary care and increased infectious diagnoses paralleled the increased service demand.
