What is it about?
We have experimentally demonstrated a range sensor that remotely measures distance of sensor from target. Laser beam emitted from sensor reflects off of target and returns to sensor. Back at the sensor, returning beam's waist or thickness is measured. We can use the measured beam thickness to find how much beam has diverged and therefore how far the beam has propagated. Electrically tunable focus lenses at the sensor control the spot size of the beam for multiple measurements and a fit-based estimate of target distance.

Why is it important?
Relatively cheap as CW Gaussian laser (such as a standard HeNe) is used. Simple and straightforward technique.
Perspectives
Untapped potential in my opinion. Technique only really falters if target is not flat and reflective but industrial applications such as metal sheet detection exist.
