What is it about?

The design and manufacture of the band-defining filters and their associated dichroic beam splitter for the 11- and the 12 micron infrared channels of the advanced along-track scanning radiometer are described.

Why is it important?

The advanced along-track scanning radiometer (AATSR) instrument is a seven-channel visible–infrared radiometer that is due to be launched on the European Space Agency satellite, ENVISAT-1.

Perspectives

We have demonstrated the use of a bandpass filter for simultaneously defining a spectral band and performing the function of a dichroic beam splitter with a minimum of polarization and angle of incidence effects.
