What is it about?

Martianus Capella's work, a late-antique encyclopedia about the seven liberal arts, attracted a large amount of scholarship in the ninth century, particularly in the margins of the manuscripts in which his texts were transmitted. In this volume, the book, its early medieval reception and its intellectual context is analyzed. Carolingian scholars read Martianus' peculiar prose and poetry for its language and style, for the knowledge held within, but also to create a network of authorities on different topics in the margins.
