What is it about?

This story offers the story of a dead whale toured as a sideshow in the United States in the 1880s. The whale was remade--"remediated"--throughout the voyage as promoters tried to preserve it. Its remediation helps us understand the infrastructures that its tour made visible, as well as the changing cultural status of the whale during the decline of the U.S. whaling industry and ascent of fossil fuels.
