What is it about?
This article examines the growing role of a multilingual North African comics/graphic works in the light of the recent rise of transnational collectives and collaborations. Galvanized by virtual communities and the Arab Spring, comics in the Maghreb claim multiple and sometimes contradictory orientations, partaking in a Francophone scene, an “Arab” scene, and even a “world” scene. Through these complex games, where the presumed identity of the work fluctuates, the old “margin” contests centers of cultural (and comics) production. Cet article examine la place grandissante d’une bande dessinée maghrébine plurilingue. Grace au récent essor de collectifs et de collaborations transnationales, galvanisé par les communautés virtuelles et consolidé à la suite des révolutions arabes, la BD au Maghreb s’inscrit dans des orientations multiples et parfois contradictoires et se revendique d’une scène “francophone,” d’une scène “arabe,” ou encore d’une scène “mondiale.” A travers ces jeux complexes, où l’identité présumée de l’œuvre fluctue, l’ancienne “marge” se joue des centres.

Why is it important?
It offers a panoramic view of the recent development of comics and graphic novels in the MENA region across French and Arabic languages. It also sheds light on power relations between centers of comics production and emergent comics cultures, and new South-South networks that develop in response.
