What is it about?

A new interpretation of Cyprian has argued that certain key texts dealing with salvation were written to schismatics, so they cannot be applied to those in other religions. This interpretation has failed to account for Cyprian's entire corpus, as well as his overarching theology, which saw the church as the bastion of salvation since it alone was tied to the Holy Spirit.

Why is it important?

In the past few decades, some scholars have tried to find pluralism or inclusivism in the writings of the church fathers, including Cyprian of Carthage. For Cyprian, their arguments do not account for all of Cyprian's writings, nor for his overarching theology, so it misunderstands his thinking. The argument for pluralism and inclusivism should rest on its own merits and not upon a false foundation that requires planting modern ideas into the minds of those who lived in the past.
