Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) can work to improve mental health by acting on factors that determine mental health of people. This article reviews research on how NGOs can work woth family; friends and communities; education and skills; good work; money and resources; and housing; and surroundings. .

Why is it important?

Mental health has not improved, and we need more resources and new thinking to combat the epidemic of ill mental health. Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) constitute a resource which remains largely untapped in the field of mental health promotion. However, the article reports that there is a lack of research in this field, in spite of the significant untapped potential of civil society to contribute to the mental health in all policies.
