What is it about?

A comparison of kerogen decomposition kinetic models derived from open system pyrolysis experiments using one or more heating rates reveals that significant error and occur using a single ramp. This error can be reduced using a minimum of three different ramp rates spanning the range allowed by the instrumentation.

Why is it important?

It has been proposed that a kerogen decomposition kinetic models derived from a single ramp rate experiment are satisfactory for use in basin models. We demonstrate that this only holds for kerogen so where the optimized A factor is close to the user-selected A factor.

Perspectives

It has long been standard practice to use multiple ramp rate data to derive kinetic models. The small savings in cost and time one gains using one experiment is not justified as the error can have a significant effort on the timing and amount of hydrocarbon generation in basin models
