What is it about?

This paper examines a new approach : the 3D stratigraphic forward modelling, which aims to quantify sedimentary layer characteristics (geometry, facies...) by simulating the processes that form them. In particular, this paper focuses on the quantification of reservoir presence probability, and sensitivity analysis.

Why is it important?

In exploration to appraisal studies, geologists are faced to two main questions : how much oil is there? how to get it fast and clean? 3D stratigraphic forward modelling, coupled with probability and sensitivity analysis, is a way to quantify sedimentary architecture and to mitigate exploration and appraisal risks.

Perspectives

We hope this article will help people to understand better the added-values of 3D stratigraphic forward modelling, but also the way to use it in real studies to improve their risk analysis.
