What is it about?

The Xujiahe Formation in Sichuan foreland basin consists of interfingering siliciclastic and carbonate sediments deposited in fluvial and lacustrine environments. We established a comprehensive interpretation scheme of lithology and sedimentary environment based on calibration of log facies and borehole image interpretation in the core wells and then extrapolated into all other wells with different data suits. The litho facies and paleo current directions in the wells are integrated with the regional seismic data to guide the stratigraphic correlation. We thus established the regional sedimentary systems and stratigraphic framework.

Why is it important?

We provide a workflow with defendable techniques to characterize the complex rock types, sedimentary systems and stratigraphic framework for sweet-spotting and appraisal of the unconventional plays in the foreland basin. The integrated work gives an answer to the long debated sequence stratigraphy vs. the litho-stratigraphy in the region. It not only provides the fundamental geological framework for hydrocarbon exploration and development of the Xujiahe Formation, but may be a show case of how multi-disciplinary integration enhances the value of data and geological understanding in other regions.

Perspectives

Writing this article is a great learning process and as well as an extensive review of what we did right and wrong during the project. I want to thank the coauthors of the paper and also my Shell colleagues and professors in the local universities, who were involved in technical discussions, data handling and the project work. I hope this article brings the good memories to all.
