What is it about?

Due to the difference of rock mechanics properties, detachment layers are usually developed in the transition zone between carbonate rock and shale, i.e. at the base of shale, in the tectonic deformation region. The cracks and microcracks in the detachment layer can connect more pores and improve the connectivity of the shale. Shale gas is more easily released from the shale matrix.

Why is it important?

Our findings show that the presence of the detachment layer in the tectonic deformation region, especilly anticlines, makes the preservation conditions a very important factor that controls the shale gas resource potetial of the Wufeng-Longmaxi shales.
