What is it about?

Chronic post op implant infections clinicians usually do not have a high suspicion of TB as they usually just do culture and sensitivity with gram staining and even despite adequate antibiotics the infection fails to resolve. Bearing in mind that TB is still endemic in many places a simple ZN staining can provide valuable information about the nature of infection and a protocol to treat these infections has been devised.

Why is it important?

Increasing incidence of TB and immunocompromised status of patients in view of unresolving infection this should always be kept in mind and this protocol can reduce morbidity associated with this type of chronic infection

Perspectives

Even after adequately treating many patients infections did not seem to heal and the approach should be to use more available tests to detect other species of organisms not picked up by conventional techniques.
