What is it about?

This work describes the patho-anatomy which is encountered in cases with unstable pelvic ring injuries in children and the differences to what seen in adults.

Why is it important?

We discovered and described a new pathology encountered with unstable posterior pelvic ring injury which is the frequent avulsions of the iliac apophysis with intact ipsilateral transverse process of the 5th lumbar vertebra. This is in contrast to the known pathoanatomy of adult posterior pelvic injuries, and necessitates a different strat- egy if operative treatment is planned.

Perspectives

The findings described in our study whether the patterns of anterior and posterior pelvic ring disruptions in paediatric pelvic ring injury or the association of apophyseal avulsions whether the anterior pubic apophysis or the posterior iliac crest apophysis is highly consistent with what we see with every unstable pelvic ring injury in immature children.
