What is it about?
Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and total hip arthroplasty (THA) are two of the most frequently performed surgical procedures in the western world. After surgery, patients are eager to return to drive. Therefore a frequently asked question is ‘when can I return to drive?’ An objective parameter to objectify fitness to drive is the total brake response time (TBRT), which can be measured in an experimental setting. In the past years much research on postoperative TBRT has been done, however there is still no consensus and the need for objective measures and official guidelines remains. The aim of this meta-analysis was to assess the current available evidence on return to drive after elective, primary, total knee arthroplasty (TKA) or total hip arthroplasty (THA) for osteoarthritis (OA).
