Atypical femoral fractures related to bisphosphonate treatment

What is it about?

A systematic review of treatment of atypical femoral fractures was carried out to evaluate the outcomes of surgical fixation of complete atypical fractures and assess whether prophylactic surgery is necessary for incomplete atypical fractures. A total of 733 patients with 834 atypical complete or incomplete femoral fractures were evaluated. Intramedullary nailing is the first-line treatment for complete fractures, although the possibility of delayed healing and revision surgery seems to be higher than with typical femoral fractures. Prophylactic surgery with intramedullary nail should be considered in patients with incomplete fractures that experience e intractable pain.
