What is it about?

Responsive behaviour is common in dementia trajectory and it results in institutionalization. This study systematically examined the staff experience of managing this behaviour in older persons' residential care services. All findings are summarised by using the VIPS framework.

Why is it important?

Our findings show the importance of dementia-specific education for all staff and creating a supportive working environment. Person-centred care for people with dementia requires a creative workforce.

Perspectives

Writing this article was a great way to communicate the importance of the empathetic approach to all people with dementia in residential care. Thorough knowledge of the client's life history and dementia enhances the personhood of people with dementia.
