What is it about?
The COVID 19 pandemic posed a major challenge for our Respiratory Specialist Nursing team across our region as we were unable to see patients face to face due to the risk of infection for patients and our team. This was a major concern for our team as we wanted to ensure that we could still deliver guideline based care over the phone or by video consultation and ensure patient and staff safety.

Why is it important?
Airborne transmission of the COVID 19 virus caused significant illness and many deaths during the global pandemic and our specialist nursing team wanted to continue to deliver safe, effective and guideline based care during this unprecedented healthcare crisis using teleconsultation methods without the requirement to have in person contact.
Perspectives
I think that providing structure and consistency to clinical reviews in people with common respiratory conditions is important as current national clinical guidelines can be adhered to and teams can ensure that they follow best practice in their speciality. The templates we developed supported best practice and were seen as a service improvement which are still in use within the team five years on. I also think that as new guidelines have recently been published in Asthma and COPD it’s worth revisiting the templates we developed to see where updates may be required. This is currently under discussion.
