What is it about?

Culture is an important aspect of social determinants of health. Consequently, health care professionals should become aware, understand and take into consideration women's cultural heritage, practices and traditions that can impact breastfeeding intention, initiation and continuation.

Why is it important?

Our societies are becoming increasingly multicultural. Women deserve meaningful, holistic and high quality breastfeeding support, and it can only be achieved if health professionals become culturally sensitive and competent to provide breastfeeding based on women's social determinants of health, such as culture.

Perspectives

I wrote this article after undertaking a breastfeeding course and discovering my passion for health inequalities. It is vital for health professionals to consider social determinants of health, in particular culture, when supporting women and families to breastfeed
